When people guess my age
When people have guessed my age in the last 6 months, they've guessed 18, 20, 22.

The grad student peers who think I'm 22 said I should be happy to look so young. My concern was more that I acted and thought like a kid.

Maybe people will think I'm a child genius instead of a naive gen-Xer.

I would say it's more your manner of speech than what you say or think. Your intelligence and depth of thinking has always been obvious to me, but I could understand how some people might think child genius. You have a lot of energy and enthusiasm, an effusive manner associated with youth. You don't take yourself too seriously, you have a playful and physical conversational style.

All of this is not a bad thing. I think it's just a matter of being aware of it; whether or not you want to change, awareness is valuable for managing your self-presentation. I think it's just unusual. As PhD comics have taught us, grad students start idealistic and determined and up bitter and dissipated. I would be grateful you seem to have found another path. :-)

Well, I haven't made it through far through grad school so I could still be on the road to bitterness. ;)

I suspect you're mostly right about the manner of speaking. I'm grateful that while the passport lady who I spoke to very little (but some) thought I was 18, my fellow classmates who've known me for 2 quarters bumped me up to 22.

Roll with it as long as you can. I had someone comment on how I used to seem so sunshiney, happy, and optimistic. You know, back in the day. :) And I didn't even go to grad school in the intervening time.

Wait -- you mean you're not 22 anymore? When did that happen? People have to tell me these things, you know.

I'm not sure you quite count as Gen-X though... maybe just the tail end.
