Diet Coke is Gross. Why do I drink it?

Because aspartame is massively habituating, and all the studies "proving" otherwise have measured the wrong thing (side effects of withdrawal after short-term megadoses in animals)?

I believe it, though obviously anecdotal evidence isn't any good for the population at large. Personally, though, I can feel an aspartame withdrawal: when I replace Diet Coke with other sources of caffeine, such as coffee or tea, I still crave Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, etc.. I suppose it could also be a craving for other qualities of the beverage, and not necessarily aspartame. I haven't bothered to control for all the factors. :) It doesn't matter exactly what the factor is on a personal level, since I'm either addicted to DC or not.

That said, kicking the DC habit was made considerably easier by having a ready supply of cold, caffeinated beverages lying around, such as a big pitcher of iced tea. I still craved the DC for a bit, but was excited enough about the tea (Lupicia teas are awesome) that it got me over the hump.

I agree with Matt, it's much easier to kick the habit when you have something chilled and tasty available as an alternative. Water is bland and usually not as cold.

I mostly drank diet coke because there was an infinite supply of pre-chilled, bubbly ones in the fridge. The potassium benzoate was just a bonus. Our drink availability is out of whack now; the few juices and waters run out quickly - leaving nothing but soda left in the afternoon.

It is the only antidote to a powerful long lasting poison that has been introduced into your body some seven months prior to your reading this.

yes, but to complete the removal of the poison from my body, I need to celebrate no pants day. it is the only way.

Yeah, that shit is nasty.

Also, women who walk around with band aids on the backs of their feet... why don't they get rid of those damn shoes and find something that doesn't tear their skin off?

sometimes it's expensive to buy shoes that aren't just sneakers but don't take your feet off. mostly, I agree with you. but shoes that need bandaids at first sometimes break in and become awesome on their own -- so maybe they're just breaking them in?

You don't know why you're afraid of Diet Coke? My dear let me count the ways:

caffeine: bad stuff in large quantities... at least drink green tea or yerba mate, for a really healthy, nourishing caffeine fix.

carbonation: prevents your body from fully absorbing calcium. Yeah, brittle bones, fun fun, I'll come to your house in 20 years and snap you like matchsticks!

sugar/synthetic substitutes: all are quite bad. The only good sweeteners are maple syrup, agave nectar, stevia and xylitol. As far as I know, Coca Cola company is not that evolved yet.

If I were you, I'd try KOMBUCHA. It packs a great buzz, is actually ALIVE (like how yogurt is alive, with real living enzymes), and is healthy, with protein, and super refreshing like a soda...

Stay healthy cuzzin!

Oh no, I knew why I was afraid of diet coke. I just didn't know why I was drinking it. :)

I do really like certain kombucha -- but I'd drink the homemade stuff. they'd make it at the google kitchen. I've been scared to try the bottled stuff because I heard it doesn't taste nice. on your recommendation, i'll look for it.

G.T.'s Kombucha is a good brand. It's the one in the really pretty bottles with the nicely colored labels, and all the different flavors (mango, ginger, cranberry, etc). Of course it's nice to just get original, but having some berry flavor or ginger or something is nice too.

I've tried other bottled kombuchas and yeah, they can be somewhat odd in flavor. I've made homemade that has totally kicked my butt! It made me feel SO HIGH!!!! :) Love the stuff!

thanks for the recommendation! I can't wait to see how it compares to the google chef's elixirs, which tasted like a lightly fizzy, light apple juice with bite
